How to plant your lotus
Choose a wide (11 - 20 inches wide or wider), shallow, no holes container for your lotus tuber. Fill the container 2/3 full with loam soil. Dig a shallow trench across the surface of the soil and gently place the lotus tuber in the trench. Take care not to break or damage the growth tips. Cover all but the growth tips with an inch or two of soil, leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add 2 inches of water above the soil and place your container in a sunny area outdoors (8 - 12 hours of sunlight daily). Do not fertilize your lotus until it has aerial leaves.
How to fertilize your lotus
Wait until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water to fertilize your lotus. We recommend a slow release fertilizer like 'Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs' for optimum growth, best bloom and ease of use. Simply press the tabs into the soil near the roots of the lotus taking care not to damage the roots. Fertilize throughout the growing/blooming season (June through September). Your final dose of fertilizer should be in early September, allowing your lotus to go into dormancy naturally.
