Lotus Planting Instructions

Plant in wide (20 inches or wider), shallow container using heavy loam soil. Dig a trench across the top of the soil and place the tuber in the trench with the growth tips pointing up. Gently cover all but the growth tips with soil. Add a 3-4 inches of water above the soil and place in a sunny spot (8 hours+ sunlight) in your pond or on your patio. In a week or two you will have coin leaves on the surface of the water.

Lotus Fertilizing Instructions

Once the coin leaves turn into aerial leaves growing out of the water, you may fertilize your lotus plant once a month with pond tabs. Lotus are very heavy feeders. Push the pond tabs down into the soil, being careful not to damage the tuber or the roots of the lotus plant. Fertilize your lotus plants from June through September, making the last fertilizer application in early September. We recommend Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs+ Humates, for best bloom, robust plants and ease of use..

Please see our 'Complete Lotus Growing Guide' included with your lotus purchase.

*Heavy loam soil can be made by using equal parts of generic top soil from Lowe's or Home Depot and 100% clay kitty litter (no perfumes or dyes). Never use potting soil as it will float right out of the pot! Never use rocks as lotus plants can not get nutrients from rocks-- and do not have the strength to push past the rocks to grow. Follow our instructions and you will have lotus blooms from summer until frost! Pot size (the wider the better), fertilizer and hours of sunlight all determine how large and how many lotus flowers will grow on your lotus plant.  Never cram a large lotus into a little container as you will not get as many blooms throughout the summer.
