Where can I buy a Blue Lotus?

Where can I buy a Blue Lotus?

Unfortunately there are NO BLUE LOTUS — not now, not ever. All blue lotus images you see on E-Bay or Amazon are Photo-shopped or are blue waterlilies. There are only two Lotus species  — one pink, the other yellow. Thousands of years of breeding has never produced anything in the blue or purple spectrum. So, no blue lotus means no blue lotus seeds. End of story.  However. . . there is a true story behind the plant historically called, Blue Lotus of the Nile.

THE TRUE STORY, from Ancient EGYPT

There is a very light blue waterlily mistakenly called the "Blue Lotus of the Nile", before plant classifications were made. It is a light blue waterlily species from the Nile River called Nymphaea caerulea,  one of MANY blue waterlilies. It was important to the Ancient Egyptians and even pictured in their tombs.

We sell N. caerulea plus many other blue lilies. But waterlilies grow very differently than lotus. Be aware of what you are looking for and what really exists.

Please Note: the authentic  n. 'Caerulea' waterlily, color, shape and form on the left below. This is the waterlily from Egypt of historical significance, known as the Blue Lotus of the Nile. Any other color, shape, or form, like the one on the right, is a different waterlily.  The image on the right illustrates why we hybridize. Hybridization often improves petal count, color, number of blooms, or other qualities from the species you find in nature.

Know the difference between waterlilies vs lotus

  •  Waterlily (Nymphaea) seeds are very small, about the size of a peppercorn or smaller
  • Lotus (Nelumbo) seeds are much larger and very hard,  like the size of peanut M&Ms
  • Waterlilies only grow to the water's surface, with floating leaves
  •  Lotus leaves and flowers grow 14 inches to 80 inches above the water (depending on the variety)

Please don't be fooled. . .

We want you to be successful when growing water garden plants,  there are plenty of places on the internet with very misleading information. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true!
