Best Tall or Large Pond Lotus

Best Tall or Large Pond Lotus make excellent specimens in your pond or in containers for your water garden feature. They should grow and bloom the very first year! There are several factors you should consider when making your Large/Tall pond lotus purchase:

1.) Large/Tall pond lotus require more space than smaller varieties. Pond lotus should always be planted in containers, whether they are placed in your pond or kept as container specimens. Large/tall pond lotus need very large, very wide pots. 20" is the minimum size for a large/tall pond lotus, a 24" - 48" container is preferable.

2.) Large/Tall pond lotus should be placed in full sun and your lotus tuber should be planted in loam soil, keeping the growth tips exposed. Add 4 - 6" of water over the soil and DO NOT fertilize until after several aerial leaves are growing up out of the water. Fertilize every three weeks during the growing/blooming season.

3.)Large/Tall pond lotus should be planted in containers deep enough to keep the wind from knocking them over. You may add some heavy stones in the bottom of your container to keep the wind from blowing over your tall/large lotus specimen.

Once you have had a successful lotus season, and by this, I mean growing your lotus from tubers and having them flower throughout the summer season, you will want to know how to over winter your lotus. Once cooler weather has arrived, it is time for you to begin to ready your lotus for winter. Lotus are hardy and go dormant in cooler weather with less sunlight. If your pond does not freeze solid, your lotus will go dormant and will be fine left where they are. If you are in a more moderate climate, your lotus will also go dormant and you can leave your lotus where they are, making sure to keep water in their container over the winter months. If you wish to bring your lotus indoors to overwinter, just drain the water from the container, careful not to disturb the tubers, and allow to sit dormant in cool, dry conditions over the winter in the coolest part of your basement or garage.

To overwinter, begin this process by removing all spent flowers and seed heads from your lotus plants and cut the stems down to about 10" above the water. The reason for this is that the lotus stems are hollow and if you should cut down the stems beneath the water level, you will drown the plant.

Your lotus will survive the winter with no problem and begin growing again in the spring when the weather and water warm up again. New tubers will send up new plants and you may eventually have to divide your lotus.
