How to plant a lotus tuber

Choose a wide (24 - 48 inches wide or wider), shallow, no holes container for your lotus and fill it 2/3 full with loam soil. Dig a shallow trench on the surface of the soil and gently place the lotus tuber in the trench. Be careful not to break or damage the growth tips on the lotus tuber. Cover all but the growth tips with loam soil, leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add 5 - 6 inches of water above the tuber and place your container in a sunny area of your outdoor living space. Lotus must receive 8 - 12 hours of sunlight daily to grow and bloom. Do not fertilize your lotus until you have aerial leaves.

How to fertilize your lotus

Once you have aerial leaves growing out of the water, you may fertilize your lotus. We recommend a slow release fertilizer like 'Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs' for optimum growth, best bloom and ease of use. Simply press the tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus, taking care not to damage the roots.
