How to plant your lotus
Plant your lotus when days and nights are consistently warm, after danger of frost has passed. Fill a wide, shallow, no-holes container 2/3 full with loam soil. Dig a shallow trench across the surface of the soil and gently place the lotus tuber in the trench. Cover all but the growth tips with an inch or two of soil while leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add 2 - 4 inches of water above the soil and place the container in a sunny area outdoors. Lotus need 8 - 12 hours of sunlight to grow and bloom. Do Not fertilize until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water.
When to fertilize your lotus plants
Fertilize your lotus plants once you have aerial leaves growing out of the water. If you fertilize too early you may kill or stunt the plant. We recommend Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs for ease of use, optimum growth and best bloom! Simply press the slow release fertilizer tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus plants, taking care not to damage the roots. Do this each month, June through September, making September the last application of fertilizer for the year.
