How to plant your lotus
Plant your lotus tuber in a wide (11 - 20 inches or wider), shallow, no holes container using loam soil. Fill your lotus container 2/3 full of loam soil. Dig a trench across the surface of the soil. Gently place your lotus tuber in the trench, taking care not to bruise or damage the growth tips. Carefully cover the tuber with an inch or two of soil while leaving the growth tips exposed. Gently add 2 - 3 inches of water above the soil. Place your lotus container in a sunny area outdoors where it will receive 8 - 12 hours of sunlight daily. Check the water level, as water can evaporate quickly on warm days. Always replenish the water that has evaporated with warm water. Do not fertilize until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water.
How to fertilize your lotus
Wait until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water to fertilize your lotus. We recommend a slow release fertilizer like 'Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs' for optimum growth, best bloom and ease of use. Simply press the fertilizer tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus, taking care not to damage the roots. Lotus should be fertilized throughout the growing/blooming season (June through September) and the last dose of fertilizer should be given in early September. This allows your lotus to go into dormancy naturally.
