(Chinese: Junyi lian)
First day blooms on this small lotus are SIMPLY LOVELY! The cherubic blooms are soft-pink with red-pink edging and are absolutely divine. This lotus often has green petaloids which add to the beauty and intrigue of this lotus specimen. Named for a prominent horticulturalist from China, this elegant lotus is small and will easily grow in a small container in a sunny area of your deck, pond or patio. Place it where you can see it-- as it is certain to be a favorite!
Plant this small lotus in a wide (16-20 inch or wider), shallow container using heavy loam soil. Dig a trench across the surface of the soil and gently place the lotus tuber in the trench, covering all but the growth tips with soil, leaving the growth tips exposed. Add a couple of inches of water above the soil and place where it will receive at least 8+ hours of sunlight per day (outdoors). In a week or two you will have coin leaves on the surface of the water, a week or so after the coin leaves, you will have aerial leaves growing out of the water.
Once you have aerial leaves--you may fertilize your lotus with 3 fertilizer tabbs per month during the growing/blooming season (June through September). Simply press the fertilizer tabbs into the soil around the roots of your lotus, being careful not to damage the roots. Replenish any water that evaporates from the small bowl or container you are using for your lotus.
