Lotus Planting Instructions
Plant this medium sized lotus, Large Purple Jade Lotus, in a wide (18 - 30 inches or wider), shallow container using heavy loam soil. Dig a trench in the soil and gently place your lotus tuber in the trench being careful not to break or damage the growth tips. Cover the tuber with soil while leaving the growth tips exposed. Add four inches of water above the soil and place your lotus container in a sunny location outdoors. (Lotus need 8+ hours of sunlight to grow and bloom.) Replace any water that evaporates. In a week or two you should have coin leaves on the surface of the water. A week or two after that you should have aerial leaves growing out of the water. Once you have aerial leaves, it is time to fertilize your lotus.
Lotus Fertilizing Instructions
Lotus are very heavy feeders. We recommend Waterlily World Fertilizer Tabs + Humates for optimum growth, best bloom and ease of use. Simply press four fertilizer tabs into the soil near the roots of your lotus, being careful not to damage the roots. Do this once a month throughout the growing/blooming season (June through September). Your lotus should grow and bloom the very first year!
Please Note:
Always plant your lotus tuber in warm weather, after all danger of frost has passed. (Lotus may be stored in the crisper of your refrigerator until proper planting time in your area)
Always use heavy loam soil, NEVER POTTING SOIL, as potting soil will float right out of the pot! (You can mix up a batch of heavy loam soil by mixing regular topsoil with 100% clay kitty litter!) Make sure the kitty litter has no fragrance or additives, simply 100% clay as the only ingredient) Also, NEVER use heavy composted materials as your soil as it will foul the water!
Never fertilize your lotus until you have aerial leaves growing out of the water! Fertilizing too soon will kill your lotus!
