Lotus Pests

Lotus Pests

Some common pests you may encounter while growing pond lotus are as follows:

1.) Waterlily Leafcutter

2.) Yellow Striped Army Worm

3.) Waterlily Aphids

4.) Japanese Beetles

5.) Leafhoppers

We do not recommend pesticides, we recommend mixing a drop of Dawn and water in a spray bottle to discourage pests from your lotus leaves.

  • There are many eco-friendly products available to help eliminate these pests from your water garden.
  • There are also naturally occurring bacteria like kurstaki or a product called BT (available at most garden centers or hardware stores) that can be used to control pests.
  • Japanese Beetles can be re-routed by placing lures downwind of your lotus.
  • Often, pests that appear on the leaves of your lotus can be removed by hand.

Beneficial Insects and Wildlife

There are also symbiotic relationships with other species that are beneficial to your lotus. Your lotus may provide a living and breeding environment for frogs, dragonflies, and damselflies  as well as attracting honey bees and butterflies to your water garden.
